The name may suggest a bedtime yoga routine, but these deep stretches and restorative postures are also appropriate in conjunction with a cardio or strength training workout--or as a stress buster at any time of day. Instructor Sara Ivanhoe has a soothing, encouraging manner, but dispenses with the pseudo-spiritualism of some programs (as opposed to the real Eastern philosophy espoused in more serious efforts). She takes the time to explain the essential yogic breathing and each posture is clearly demonstrated--including modifications. After seated stretches, she teaches a series of kneeling cat poses, launches into down dog, and a standing twist. For balance: tree pose, then lunges, forward bends, and a butterfly stretch. This 43-minute practice isn't particularly advanced or strenuous, so beginners will be fine. Also included is a 16-minute "wake-up" routine, intended specifically for energizing in the morning with a standing cat stretch, pyramid pose and a squat. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Easy going   June 7, 2010

I love Sara Ivanhoe! She presents yoga in very easy to learn non-intimidating way. The yoga is relaxing and she has a modifier showing easier versions. It's go at your own pace- don't overdo it yoga.

2 out of 5 stars Glad I Rented Before Buying!   May 21, 2010

This seemed as though it would be perfect. I need a short morning routine because I'm too rushed before work, and then a longer PM routine because I'm too wound up to sleep. It had great reviews so I Netflixed it. I've found this dvd to be highly overrated. So glad I rented before buying!

The energizing session- no sun salutation! I don't think I've ever encountered that! It definitely felt like something was missing. Even the 10 minute AM session from YogaWorks has a sun salutation! It is essential for an energizing routine!!

The music- it doesn't bother me, per se, but it is too loud. And when the instructor stops talking, it gets even louder! You can turn the music off on the audio setup, but then it's almost too quiet. I like a bit of soft music in the background as a white noise that keeps you from focusing on the cars outside, the kids upstairs, the dryer buzzing, etc... I wish you could adjust the music volume separate from the instructor.

I don't get the candles. The studio is so bright you could perform surgery in there. They don't really add any ambiance, they actually just look stupid because it's so bright in there. They don't look aromatic; if they were then maybe I could see why they're using them.

And your breathing should sound like Darth Vader? Give me a break! What a silly thing to say. Plus, Vader is a total mouth breather and you should breathe through the nose. If you're sounding like Vader something is wrong!

There are too many people on the set, I think, and they all look like some uber-trendy yoga clique that want everyone to know how cool they are for doing yoga. They look like some of the people I did yoga with in high school (early 90s) with their Hindu shirts from the local head shop, etc...

The movements themselves are good. It is a good routine for beginner to intermediate. The flow would be better if the standing poses were done in the beginning (relaxation routine). The instructor is a little chatty, but I've seen worse (YogaWorks) in the talking department, so that's not too big a deal for me. I just feel the whole production is very contrived and showy. Every great once in a while I'll do it for something different, or if I need a quick AM routine I'll do this one and add my own sun salutation to it- I still haven't found a good, short morning/energizing yoga set!

Overall, not recommended. Pass this and go for Elena Brower!

3 out of 5 stars Relaxing, but boring....and too chatty   March 27, 2010

This feels like an instructional video with all of the chatter. While it was nice to give tips on proper form, she went into more details than that. I fast forwarded through the first 4 minutes or so.

It is also best done with eyes shut. The cold, classroom environment really took away from the video.

The music is very relaxing, and the poses are as well. But for me, I was bored. If I had known it had an instructional feel to it, I would not have purchased it. Relaxing doesn't have to equal dull.

5 out of 5 stars Just what my wife asked for...   March 25, 2010

My wife wanted a replacement for her worn out videotape version. This works better, clearer, easier, jumps higher and runs faster. thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Sara Ivanhoe Knows How to Help You Relax   September 19, 2009

This is "the best" DVD for a relaxing yoga exercise session. I use this DVD almost EVERY night before going to sleep. It is a wonderful stress reliever. I ordered it for my Grandson's Kindergarten Teacher last year. This year I ordered it to give to my girlfriends for Christmas. [There is also a 15 minute version included to use when I need a short session.]
