Amazon.com Kathy Smith's Step Workout is a splendid introduction to step for the novice, and a solid workout for intermediates. The main workout consists of three 12-minute, progressive step segments. Beginners do only the first, then fast-forward to the cool-down; intermediates do the first two; seasoned steppers may do all three. The beginning segment uses very simple moves repeated frequently: the basic up-up-down-down, knee lifts, toe taps, leg curls, and leg lifts. The intermediate segment introduces more moves, still presented simply, and puts them together into simple combinations. It's athletically more challenging, but not complicated. The advanced segment adds more strenuous moves such as straddles, lunges, and gentle propulsion moves. After the cool-down is an abdominal segment using the step as a slant board, and then a short upper-body sculpting segment starting with pushups and then using weights. At the end, a special teaching guide for novice steppers demonstrates the basics of stepping. Experienced steppers who like a lot of choreography will get bored quickly, but if you want the athleticism of step without complicated choreography, you'll be happy here. Smith's cueing and safety guidelines, as always, are excellent. --Joan Price

Like it - Be Careful of Cool Down August 21, 2010 Joan's review I like the Kathy Smith Step Workout. It has stages for beginners to advance step exercises. You can work your way up. I did have an issue with the some of the cool down exercises. For my part I will have to modify the cool down exercises to fit what I am physically able to accomplish. I have used this video twice since I purchased it and plan to use it again. I really enjoy step exercises and I am 58 years old.

Step Workout June 24, 2010 Doris Wilson I really like this workout. It's organized very well and it's easy to adjust to either your available time or your fitness level. With the 3 sections; beginning, intermediate and advanced, it's easy to get what you want. There is also a good toning section using weights and a mat. My ONLY problem with this is that when I ordered it, I ended up ordering duplicates because they show the SAME WORKOUT with 2 DIFFERENT fronts! very deceptive.
Boring June 12, 2010 Eva 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Boring. It's hardwork and thorough -all good things (two stars). But it will bore you to death if you've had *any* step aerobics in your past. The moves are very basic (even in the advanced section, it *almost* approaches the moves I was doing in step class in the mid 90's). The music is elevator musak and simply annoying. Honestly, I don't understand how anyone who has done step before has fun doing this workout.
However, it might be a good place to start if you've never been exposed to step moves before. But you should know that the basic instructions (such as proper stepping technique) are in a segment that comes AFTER the workout! So, don't do the workout and then watch the extras afterwards. Also, I'd think that after a few weeks of regular workouts, even beginners will have mastered the steps, memorized the routine and will be listening to the god awful musak while watching the clock (that's what I'm doing). A reviewer who liked this video mentioned that she mixes it in with 12 or more other workout videos... and I think that's another way of saying "this video gets stale fast".
Fun workout May 18, 2010 C. Frost I would probably buy another Kathy Smith DVD. Her workouts are fun. I've only done the cardio workouts so far. My only complaint is that I wish the DVD was all cardio instead of a mix of cardio and strength training.
