I really like this video. It has 2 discs, one for practicing the poses and the other to do the actual exercises. It is very doable and good for beginners. It is slow paced and very thorough. The narrator has a nice steady voice and walks you thru. all the steps.

Excellent 2 DVD set. I used the pose encyclopedia to assit me with my teaching scripts for yoga teacher training. It was very helpful, and provided a lot of useful imagery suggestions that would be benefitial to teaching students.

4 out of 5 stars A So-So Encyclopedia But Great Practices!   March 21, 2010

Okay, so basically this DVD is divided into two parts. The Pose Encyclopedia and the Practices.

The pose encyclopedia has 5 chapters: Sun Salutation, Backbends, Forward Bends, Twists (each one under 8 minutes) and `Other Bends' (which is twice as long). There are detailed instructions and multi-angle demonstrations for every pose. The model does a great job and I loved that Jason takes his time explaining. He is never too fast or too slow and you can actually practice comfortably along with the DVD.

As you may have noticed, the encyclopedia does not have a chapter on standing poses which I think is a major omission. No heroes, no triangles. I would have loved it instead of the `Other Bends' chapter which features somewhat dismissible asanas like Savasana, Boat in full form (not a beginner pose, in my opinion), Hero, some shoulder stretches, Ujjayi Pranayama and Head-to-big-toe pose.

Also, the DVD cover says that you'll get 35 poses, but I actually counted 18 in the encyclopedia. To be fair, there are more asanas shown in the Practices, but they aren't covered in much detail (or in multi-angle) as in the Encyclopedia. Anyway, the heroes and the triangles will be easy enough for most starting yogis and won't need further explanation.

Now, the introduction says that you'll need a sticky mat (of course), a pair of yoga blocks, a couple of blankets or folded towels and a strap. However, these props are rarely used (mostly on twisting poses), and modifications are seldom demonstrated. For example, there is no modification for the downward dog, which might be a great frustration for inflexible beginners like me.

On to the Practices, I just loved them! The 60 minute Essential practice is very complete, challenging yet within reach of most of us inflexible folks. The Awakening and Quieting Practices do exactly what they promise. They are short, 15 minute sequences and can fit into anyone's schedule. I really enjoy the longer Essential Practice but since I don't have time to go over it completely everyday I just do the short routines in the morning and in the evening.

Overall, this is a great DVD! It will be perfect if you are looking for something to complement your yoga classes but may not be well suited for an `on-your-own' beginner. In that case, I would recommend getting 30 Essential Yoga Poses: For Beginning Students and Their Teachers and Yoga Journal's: Beginning Yoga Step by Step Session 1-3 (For Beginners, 3 DVD Set). Also, Yoga for 50+: Modified Poses and Techniques for a Safe Practice features many modified poses and might be useful for the flexibility challenged beginner.
